Ways we help maize growers in Uganda become more successful

Choose the right seed variety

Select a hybrid seed variety that is well-suited to the local climate and has a high yielding ability. For example, SC719, SC649, and SC612 are good for medium to high rainfall areas, while SC651, SC510, and SC645 are better for low rainfall areas.

Improve soil fertility

Maize grows best in deep, well-drained, fertile soils. Test the soil’s fertility rate using a mobile soil kit or by sending a soil sample to a lab. The recommended soil types for maize are loam sand, clay loam, and pure loam.

Fertilize

Use the right fertilizer for the soil’s fertility and the desired yield. The most important nutrients for maize are nitrogen and phosphorus, but it also needs potassium and sometimes zinc. Manure is a good source of nutrients and can also benefit the soil.

Water conservation

Maize is susceptible to drought, especially during the flowering period. Use water conservation techniques like mulching, pot-holing, or tied-ridges to help prevent yield losses.

Weed and harvest

Weed the field 2–3 weeks after planting. Harvest the maize when the comb is full and dry.

Add value

Consider adding value to the maize, such as milling it, to increase the profit per kilogram
